Most of the mosquitoes biting you at home grew up close by, often within a few hundred feet. A forgotten bucket, a clogged gutter or a plant saucer can produce a new batch every week or so in warm weather, which is why the bites seem to come back no matter how much spray you buy.

- Summer: Peak biting season: warm water speeds larvae along, and heavy rain or watering can set off a new wave within a week or two.
- Fall: Mosquitoes keep biting until the first hard frost, and late summer into early fall is when West Nile virus cases usually peak.
- Winter: Most mosquitoes ride out the cold as eggs or resting adults, though in the warmest southern areas they can stay active much of the year.
